A Look at Brownsburg Park Board Achievements
Here's a brief look at the achievements made thanks to the hard work of Park Board members over the years.
In 1959, the Town of Brownsburg officially created the Park Board. Just a year before, the Town entered into a lease with the family of Alex H. Arbuckle to create the Town's first park, Arbuckle Acres.
In 1997, the Park Board acquired the Williams Park property, and the following year received ownership of Stephens Park from Lincoln Township.
In 1999, the Park Board hired the Town’s first Park Director to create recreation and fitness programs to increase the health and well-being of residents.
In 2005, the Veterans Memorial Garden, located just to the north of the Williams Park entrance, was dedicated. Created by a committee made up of community members, the garden features four inscribed brick walkways that lead to a circular path that surrounds a black granite monument. The monument bears the names and dates of military actions that our country has been a part of. As you stroll the circular walkway you can read storyboards that describe seven major wars in American history, from The Revolutionary War to Vietnam.
In 2007, the Cardinal Park property was acquired in a land swap with the Brownsburg Community School Corporation.
In 2010, the B&O Trail Association, Brownsburg Parks, and the Town of Brownsburg entered into an agreement to develop the first section of the B&O Trail from Green Street east to Country Road 300 North.
In 2013, Brownsburg Parks acquired the property at County Road 300 N and County Road 900 East In 2019, the property was named Virgil Park, in honor of Hall and Diana Virgil, who dedicated years to ensuring the creation of the B&O Trail, which abuts the property.
In 2014, Brownsburg Parks acquired the West Wynne Property off Northfield Drive and adjacent to the B&O Trail.
In 2015, a second agreement among the B&O Trail Association, Brownsburg Parks, and the Town of Brownsburg was entered into that expanded the trail east from County Road 300 North to the Ronald Reagan Parkway.
In 2018, Design of the White Lick Creek Greenway between Northfield Drive and Arbuckle Acres Park was completed.
Brownsburg Parks acquired the 51-acre Lincolnwood Park on West Main Street The site offers possibilities for multiple field sports activities and the creation of a nature center.
In 2019, Brownsburg Parks acquired a little over 9 acres through a donation to the park system. This land was later used in the development of the White Lick Creek Greenway, preserving natural resources and allowing for the trail to continue south to Arbuckle Acres Park.
Received a $4.4 million Park District Bond to fund improvements at Stephens Park, and construction of White Lick Creek Greenway’s phase one and a portion of the new Virgil Park.
In 2020:
- Brownsburg Parks received a $25,000 Community and Urban Forestry Assistance grant to help with invasive species eradication and to plant new trees.
- Town’s first dog park opens at Cardinal Park. Residents provided the site’s name: Cardinal Bark Park.
- With help from a $15,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Parks conducts a tree inventory of nearly 5,000 trees.
In 2021:
- The Town’s first piece of public art, partially funded by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, was installed at the Williams Park entry circle, a sculpture of a whimsical human-size bee playing a violin.
- Completed on Phase 1 of the White Lick Creek Greenway. The trail now provides access from the I-74 trailhead to Arbuckle Acres Park.
- Stephens Park renovations were completed, providing the community with six pickleball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, universal play features and a trail surrounding the park, parking for 25 cars, and a year-round restroom.
